Think Tank

Stopping to see (and appreciate) the colours

We all know the phrase "stopping to smell the roses", which is a good reminder for all of us in this hectic society. Don't stop there, use all your senses. Be sure to stop and see the colours, too. With the late arrival of spring and summer, colour seemed to suddenly appear in our landscapes. The bright pastels of the cherry blossoms emerged and then scattered across lawns and sidewalks. Vibrant greens emerged as foliage grew and then flower beds burst into all colours of the rainbow as plants began their blossoming. Wow, talk about visual delights!

As a culture, we agree on what's beautiful, vibrant, what symbolizes gender, social stature, and more. Baby girls are dressed in pink; baby boys are dressed in blue. The colour of death is black in North America but usually white in Asia. Our perception of colour is cultural and are not based in any scientific rationale. And that includes how we perceive people of different colours, too.

Stop, see the amazing colours around you, and appreciate them too,
